Note: This applet was inspired by "Energies, Thermodynamic Identities, Maxwell Relations, and the Magic Square" by A. J. Mallinckrodt, Cal Poly Pomona, 2001.
Click on the next eqn. button to see the next thermodynamic identity. The colors of the letters around the square change color to match those used in the equation to the right. State functions not involved in the particular equation are deleted for ease of visibility.
The functions at the midpoints of the square represent energies, and have SI units of J. Functions at corresponding ends of the square's diagonals: p/V, and S/T, have units of energy when multiplied together. The partial derivatives were written with d's instead of ∂'s to minimize compatability issues.
