This applet models the experimental determination of surface tension (γ) of a particular liquid at a certain temperature by measurement of the rise of the liquid in a capillary tube. The height risen (h) is equal to 2γ/ρgr, where γ is the surface tension, ρ is the density of the liquid, g is the acceleration due to gravity (9.81 m s -2 on Earth), and r is the internal radius of the capillary tube. For the purposes of this applet, the density of the liquid is set to 1.00 g cm -3.
