Professor Geoffrey Davies at Northeastern University has discovered humic acids in algae. However, algae lack two enzymes necessary for the formation of lignans - Tyrosine Ammonia Lyase (TAL), and Phenylalanine Ammonium Lyase (PAL). Additionally, lignans have never been found in any algae. Therefore, Humic acid can not be lignan.
These facts were not well received by the groups that believe that humic acid is lignan, or is a degradation product of lignan.
