Print out procedure for Co(III) (en)3 experiment, and read it carefully. We won't be doing the last part, with the dithiocarbamate.
Examine the IR spectra we generated for Al(acac)3, Fe(acac)3, and Cr(acac)3. Try to assign the peaks, and add this information to your lab report.
Monday's quiz will concern octahedral ligand fields.
Read Chapter 3 in Miessler and Tarr, pp 51 - 73. There will be two lectures on this topic, after which you should do the following problems in the book on page 73: 3-5, 3-8, 3-9, 3-10, 3-11, 3-12, 3-13, 3-16, 3-17.
During the break, start to read Chapter 9, pp. 299 - 333.
When we come back from the break, we will have a quiz on VSEPR theory - the structures of simple molecules that we did in class.
Study for the test on Monday, 1 March 2004.
When you have a chance, look at the worked-out examples of the projection operator method for C2v, C3v, and D3h.
