A Symmetry-Based Approach to Inorganic Chemistry, and Other Stories, Sein, 1st Edition. The textbook is only available in the bookstore.
Each student will be required to bring to class a working, scientific calculator, that the student actually knows how to use. This means it is better to buy a simple, dependable calculator, than an excessively complicated one. Always bring your textbook to class.
Note: The topics presented will follow the general order of the book.
Chapter 1 - Symmetry and Symmetry Elements
Chapter 2 - Groups
Chapter 3 - Good Vibrations
Chapter 4 - Spectroscopy
Chapter 5 - Transition Metal Complexes
Chapter 6 - Lewis Dots
Chapter 7 - Molecular Orbital Theory
Chapter 8 - CO and Cyanides
Chapter 9 - Electronic Spectroscopy
Chapter 10 - Crystals
Frequent quizzes will be given, usually in the first 10 minutes of class on Mondays. The relative weightings used for the calculation of the final course grade are as follows:
Final examination - 25%
First examination - 15%
Second examination - 15%
Third examination - 15%
Fourth examination - 15%
Quizzes - 5%
Vibrations Exercise - 5%
Class participation - 5%
I have always marked and returned examinations the next week of class, so the student can legitimately expect the timely return of all examinations.
Cheating in the class in any form will result in a final grade of F, with no warnings, no exceptions
